Durandor is a small and not particularly influential country in the cold, northwestern region of the continent. The population is dominated by humans although there are small numbers of many other races. In general members of other races are tolerated by the human population although they may be treated with a little extra suspicion, especially in the rural areas (and there are few urban areas in Durandor to speak of). The most common language in Durandor, Durindi, is the native language of the region and will essentially be common in this campaign.
A labeled map of Durandor along with brief descriptions of various geographic features and constructions can be found here.
Climate & Geography
Durandor is a landlocked country bounded in the
north and east by the Gray mountains, and by the Throng, Onabi and Serpent
rivers in the south and west. The climate ranges from temperate in the southern
regions to arctic in the northern regions and in the higher elevations.
Government
The system of government in Durandor is a feudal
monarchy. The nobility is dominated by three noble houses [house Zendan, house
Nithor, and house Rayni] and the royal noble house, house Armanul. Each of these
noble houses controls one of the four provinces that make up the country, with
house Armanul controlling the most populous and wealthy province in the western
part of the country. A political map of the provinces can be found
here.
The current King of Durandor is Inath Tamar Armanul III. The feudal structure of Durandor is divided into four levels of nobility. The highest is the King/Queen who rule the country and head the royal noble house. The second level is Duke/Duchess who rule one of the provinces and head on of the lesser noble houses. Below these stations are Earl/Countess and the lowest noble rank, Baron/Baroness. Each of the noble houses maintains its own contingent of soldiers. Very wealthy nobles, even those of low station, sometimes support their own personal contingent of troops.
While the noble families command much of the political power in Durandor they are not the only players. Here money and power pretty synonymous and the churches and larger guilds also command quite a bit of power and can greatly influence the political and economic landscape. It is not uncommon for some of these other organizations to come into conflict with one of the noble houses. It is not uncommon for larger guilds to have significant numbers of mercenaries and other fighting men at their disposal as well.
The political situation in Durandor represents a balance of power between many different groups who generally vie with each other for wealth and influence.
Economy
Durandor's economy is based mostly on agriculture
Peasants generally work land that owned by a noble; the noble gets a percentage
of the crops they grow and the peasant gets protection and a place to live from
the noble. While there is a large disparity in wealth the system is not as
exploitive as European feudal society was. Peasants that own their own land are
more common, their is a middle class of merchants and craftsman, and even
peasants w/o land are free to move if they are not in debt to their noble lord
(peasant debt is not as pervasive as it was in real world feudalism). Apart from
agriculture Durandor also has some mineral resources, furs and a good deal of
timber.
Churches and Other
Organizations
The churches that are influential in Durandor
are The Great Church, Rontra, Urian, Korak, Anwyn, Morwyn and Mormekar. Naryne
is also popular but only among the nobility. Churches of Naryne are rare but
many large estates and manors will have their own shrine devoted to Naryne.
Other important organizations include the merchants guild and various
craftsmen's guilds and mages guilds.
